Color Block: The Basics
You’re probably thinking….WTF is “Color Blocking”, don’t worry I’ll tell you. Color blocking is wearing purposely placed complimentary yet contrasting BOLD colors in one outfit. Using a color wheel can help you pick the right colors for your outfit. A color wheel (also referred to as a color circle) is a visual representation of colors arranged according to their chromatic relationship.
The Basic Color Wheel
Primary Colors: Colors at their basic essence; those colors that cannot be created by mixing others.
|
Secondary Colors: Those colors achieved by a mixture of two primaries.
|
Tertiary Colors: Those colors achieved by a mixture of primary and secondary hues.
|
Complimentary Colors: Those colors located close together on a color wheel.
|
Contrasting Colors: Those colors located opposite each other on a color wheel.

Pick a color you really want to wear. Pick two or three complimentary colors and put them together. You can layer in as many shades of these colors as you want, and mix in neutrals when you get stumped.
So, you decide that today is the perfect day to color block. You have the perfect pair of red (C) skinny jeans and not sure what top to wear. If you have a blue (F#) top…yes, denim counts as blue…you’re in luck! This is the easy way to accomplish a color blocking look. Throw on a some grey accessories…jacket, shoes, hardware, and you’re good to go.
