I was flipping the channel and came across Derek J and Miss Lawrence on some show on bravo, and the host asked how they felt about natural hair. They responded by saying they don’t absolutely hate it, but they are #teamweave all day long and are not fans of the style. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity for me to address mii natural/ straight hair opinion. Okay I wanna begin by saying through mii 20 years of being on this earth it is clear to me that as black girls/women our hair is one of our most prized possessions. I came out the womb getting perms and continued to get them up until 8 months ago, so I dint come from some whole natural background that taught me to flip the middle finger at a perm. However, I believe I was subconsciously taught, just like the rest of us permed background people, that straight was great and nappy was crappy! No one has blatantly said that to me, but that’s exactly how many people feel about natural hair. As soon as some people see one strand of new growth they’re quick to say how bad they need a perm, so of course if I walk around with new growth ALL THE TIME black women have a problem with it. Ill reason with you hating mii hair because that’s what you were taught, but I am so sick of people randomly wanting to touch mii hair, asking me what made me go natural, and telling me they don’t like it. Mii all-time fav is when I’m willing to talk about mii hair and permed people go on and on about how their head is shaped too funny, they’re scared, or it wouldn't look right on them. I hate the fact that you associate mii NATURAL HAIR with being too black or telling me that slave times are over. STFU!!! What does being too black even mean? Now, I don’t go around telling people that their hair is to straight and how they’re trying to be too white because that’s not how I think. I do like natural hair better, and I do believe that the only reason relaxers ever came on the scene for black people was because we wanted to look more like the “superior race” during slavery in order to vote, escape, blend in with white people, not get treated like crap etc… I am aware that literally speaking, we are not slaves anymore which Is all the more reason for me not to want to blend in with Brazilians, Peruvians, white people, or Indians. Now, If I wake up and I feel like wearing weave for a couple of days than okay, but I will not be known for having mii hair fried dyed and laid to the side. I have no problem with weave sometimes, but what I have a problem with is the thought that the way all of OUR hair grows out of our scalp is considered nappy and just a phase. As if summer 2013 natural is going to be out and perm is going to be the only style considered in. Like, people have not been wearing natural hair since idk, THE BEGINNING OF TIME. All I’m asking is that I not be criticized for mii lovely natural hair. All I’m saying is to each her own, and if you can’t get with it, then get over yourself and GROW UP!
