I was flipping the channel and came across Derek J and Miss Lawrence on some show on bravo, and the host asked how they felt about natural hair. They responded by saying they don’t absolutely hate it, but they are #teamweave all day long and are not fans of the style. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity for me to address mii natural/ straight hair opinion. Okay I wanna begin by saying through mii 20 years of being on this earth it is clear to me that as black girls/women our hair is one of our most prized possessions. I came out the womb getting perms and continued to get them up until 8 months ago, so I dint come from some whole natural background that taught me to flip the middle finger at a perm. However, I believe I was subconsciously taught, just like the rest of us permed background people, that straight was great and nappy was crappy! No one has blatantly said that to me, but that’s exactly how many people feel about natural hair. As soon as some people see one strand of new growth they’re quick to say how bad they need a perm, so of course if I walk around with new growth ALL THE TIME black women have a problem with it. Ill reason with you hating mii hair because that’s what you were taught, but I am so sick of people randomly wanting to touch mii hair, asking me what made me go natural, and telling me they don’t like it. Mii all-time fav is when I’m willing to talk about mii hair and permed people go on and on about how their head is shaped too funny, they’re scared, or it wouldn't look right on them. I hate the fact that you associate mii NATURAL HAIR with being too black or telling me that slave times are over. STFU!!! What does being too black even mean? Now, I don’t go around telling people that their hair is to straight and how they’re trying to be too white because that’s not how I think. I do like natural hair better, and I do believe that the only reason relaxers ever came on the scene for black people was because we wanted to look more like the “superior race” during slavery in order to vote, escape, blend in with white people, not get treated like crap etc… I am aware that literally speaking, we are not slaves anymore which Is all the more reason for me not to want to blend in with Brazilians, Peruvians, white people, or Indians. Now, If I wake up and I feel like wearing weave for a couple of days than okay, but I will not be known for having mii hair fried dyed and laid to the side. I have no problem with weave sometimes, but what I have a problem with is the thought that the way all of OUR hair grows out of our scalp is considered nappy and just a phase. As if summer 2013 natural is going to be out and perm is going to be the only style considered in. Like, people have not been wearing natural hair since idk, THE BEGINNING OF TIME. All I’m asking is that I not be criticized for mii lovely natural hair. All I’m saying is to each her own, and if you can’t get with it, then get over yourself and GROW UP!
Who runs the world? Well Beyoncé, the answer to your question is Chanel! Karl Lagerfeld, head designer and creative director of Chanel, had an enormous rotating globe in the middle of the runway on Tuesday. What does this mean? The globe was dressed in flags marking all the locations of Chanel stores around the world.
100 years ago Chanel opened its first boutique in Deauville and as of today there are over 300 boutiques around the world. There are 94 in Asia, 70 in Europe, 10 in the Middle East, 128 in North America, 2 in South America, and 6 in Oceania. Chanel is one of the few global brands that can sell many accessories like handbags, fragrance, and cosmetics that help build buzz and feed awareness of the brand. This can explain the success of all the boutiques, and why the world just can’t get enough of those two interlocked letter Cs. You would think that a large globe on the runway might draw attention from the models, but it could be considered genius to have the models literally walk around the globe sporting long grey and navy plaid coats with upturned collars. The collection was also full of black, which is classic for Chanel, but Mr. Lagerfeld added metallic weave into suit fabrics which was a fantastic twist. Shades of rose and navy were also spotted in this Fall/Winter 2013-2014 collection along with thigh-high boots and electric turquoise and baby pink cloche hats. These hats also shaped hairstyles in the 20th century for people like Josephine Baker. Lagerfeld added a single male model to join the host of women models on the runway. This was clever considering the only two things that run the world according to Beyoncé and Karl Lagerfeld are GIRLS and CHANEL, and who would disagree?! However, this didn’t affect the solitary male model because unlike Phileas Fogg, he journeyed around the world with eighty models and did not have a single hic up with his timing. As we all know fashion is repetitive and some of the styles that our parents wore we are beginning to wear again, like acid washed jeans and high waist pants. The only thing that has changed is the label and how we wear the styles, but besides that everything is the same. I bleached some shorts the other day and thought how just a few years ago this could have been considered as out of style. That’s when I realized that it’s never too late to make a comeback! If the clothes we wear can, then why can’t we? Maybe these shorts were put to rest because they needed time to evolve and catch up with the times. Maybe they had to wait for the right person to realize how awesome they were. The bottom-line is someone had to decide, whether it was in the 80s or today, what these shorts were going to be. As the youth of today I believe we have to take a stand for ourselves and decide who we are and what we want to be before someone else decides for us. Much like the shorts, people see potential in us and may try to make us into things that THEY wants us to be, and it’s not always what we want. Someone on a movie I watched said “Life gets in the way of Living.” Just because life got in your way or you messed up a few or a lot of times still doesn’t give someone the right to tell you who to be, we have to realize the past is the past, realize it’s never too late to make a comeback, take our lives back, and fulfill what we feel in our hearts is our purpose. Just a few months ago I was battling with myself about staying with my biology major track because I felt like was safe and I thought that’s what my family would have wanted me to do. Who wouldn’t want to be related to the pediatrician, but after consulting with a higher being, God, he revealed to me the world of fashion and my passion for it. I haven’t looked back since. I messed up over and over again when I was pretending to want to be a doctor, but when I committed to fashion, doors were being opened that I would have never imagined. I am also happier and less stressed because I am doing something I love to do. It’s never too late to make a comeback. Decide who you are and what you want before someone does it for you.
Be original in everything you are and do. -chels Have a busy day and dont have time to change clothes? here is one dress that will take you from class, to dinner, to out with friend to party! This first look is a fitted red dress that you would typically wear to a party, but when you add a over-sized cardigan, a brown satchel, and a pair of minnetonka moccasins you could wear it to class! The belt gives the cardigan a sassy personality and the nude lipgloss softens the sassy and makes you approachable. The second look is the same little red dress but the added leopard print shoes makes the outfit fierce. The blazer and beaded necklace makes this ensemble appropriate to wear to dinner. The last look you could wear on a night out. You could wear this red dress by itself or you could add a pair of teal spiked wedges and a spiked necklace to toughing up the look. The teal belt softens the look and adds a little character to the dress. The silver lipstick brings the look together! A couple of months ago if you asked me did I thrift shop I would have given you a no. But after I tried it; I was addicted! It's amazing how you can buy items for as little as $1 and turn them in to high fashion. I call this "popping tags on a budget." We always hear celebrities talk about “poppin’ tags” and “splurging”. We want to do it too, but most of us don’t have the means to do it like them. Thrift shopping is our little keyhole to success. Monday night Larissa on The Carrie Diaries said sometimes you have to fake it till you make it. That was some of the best advice i’ve heard all week. I mean if you want to grow up to be a lawyer, dress like a lawyer, act like a lawyer, talk like a lawyer. Soon enough you will achieve your goals. If you want to "POP TAGS" like celebrities you can do it, just thrift! Just walk in knowing what you like and what kind of statement your trying to make and everything will go great. I usually walk in with a budget of $30 and a set of rules. Rule #1 (unlike Shaundrie) GO IN MOTIVATED! Thrifting is Ideal for college students or if your just on a budget because you can spend a little money on a lot if items. If you have ever been in college you know that money is not flowing like milk and honey. Therefore, it’s to take the spare change that you manage to beg your parents for and buy Items that you can transform into something you’ve never seen before. Not to mention its probably something no one you know has! So Fake it til you make it and remember….Don’t Dress Like Everyone, Let Everyone Dress Like You!
-chels How do you feel about thrifting? What techniques do you use? |
